The Crawler Options tab provides a number of options for how the tool will spider the site.  When testing a site, you can choose to crawl that site and all links leaving from it.  Additionally, you can then test the sites found by crawling off the first site.  You can also crawl smaller pieces of a much larger site. You can select to validate bookmark links and you can modify Time-out settings.

The Exclusions tab allows you to exclude pages and files, based on a directory list.  This gives complete control over the whole crawl.  The tool can also be configured to honor the site's robot.txt file, if one exists.

Templates can be used to generate the HTML Report.  This allows you to create the report in your own style, such as with a certain style sheet or logo in the corner.  Additionally, for the HTML report that can be created, you can decide what to include in the report.  You can also change how the HTML results are grouped.

Optional Security Settings can be configured for HTTPS sites.  When crawling secure sites using the HTTPS protocol, the crawler by default is set to be in maximum security mode. For example, if the server certificate date has expired for the web you are crawling, then the Link Validation Utility will not crawl the site using the most restrictive security settings. Depending on the site you are crawling and your specific needs, you may loosen security to allow the crawler to crawl the site. Check the appropriate checkboxes in the form to loosen security for those particular options. Security Tab

URL Properties for any file can be viewed in detail.

The General tab of the URL Properties form allows the user to view a number of different properties for a selected URL.

  • URL: This is the URL that was tested.
  • Description: In most cases, this will be the title of the page that is tested, but in other cases, another annotation will be used for those files that do not have a title.
  • Content Type: The content value shows whether the linked page is of HTML style, or application, such as an Acrobat or Word doc, or if the document is of some other file type.
  • Size: This value shows the size of the file in bytes.
  • Last Modified: This value shows the last date and time of file modification.
  • Access Status: This field shows the result of the test. If the file was retrieved successfully, an OK will appear in the column. If the file was not returned successfully, a value such as UNREAD will be returned.
