OVERVIEW

This hands-on course covers the process-based functionality of Hi-Caption Studio. Students completing this 4 hour course will be able to create captioning files for multimedia presentations. This course is designed to train individuals to make the most effective use of these powerful tools toward achieving and maintaining multimedia presentations with captioning for the following reasons:

  • Section 508 and W3C WCAG Priority 1-3 accessibility compliance.

  • Subtitles – where text is presented in a different language than audio.

  • Loud and noisy environments.

  • Assistance for users who are learning to read.

  • Use on equipment with poor audio quality.

HiSoftware Hi-Caption creates a SAMI file that will be used by Windows® Media Player® 6.4 and greater. SAMI stands for Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange, a captioning language for Media Player. From a SAMI file, Hi-Caption can now create a SMIL file designed for captioning and used by RealNetworks RealPlayer and Apple Quicktime. SMIL stands for Synchronized Multimedia Language. It can create a SMIL file based on the 1.0 or 2.0 SMIL specifications. Also included is the software are the Hi-Caption Viewer and AccRepair for Macromedia® Flash. This allows for captioning within Flash and accessibility compliance testing for Flash Multimedia. Students completing this course will be able to use the Hi-Caption software to take their multimedia presentation to new levels by expanding their audience and meeting accessibility compliance guidelines.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will learn to use the Hi-Caption software to create captions for Windows® Media Player, RealNetworks RealPlayer and Apple Quicktime multimedia presentation. Extensive hands-on labs ensure that you leave the class with the skills necessary to create meaningful captions for your presentations. This course teaches you to:

  • Understand the differences between SAMI and SMIL captioning formats.

  • Guidelines for creating meaningful captions for presentations.

  • Understanding of the Hi-Caption user interface and settings.

  • Creating a Hi-Caption Project. o Creating a transcript and using the import wizard to create the SAMI file.

  • Using the built-in HMCC Class file editor to create specific class file used in the SAMI files used for language, font, color and other attributes.

  • Editing the Speaker List used for captioning. o Modifying the default SAMI file.

  • Creating the SMIL captioning text for RealPlayer.

  • Creating the SMIL captioning text for QucikTime.

  • Introduction to Hi-Caption for Flash.

  • Introduction to AccRepiar for Flash.
